How to Reduce Neck and Shoulder Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can lead to neck and or shoulder pain. Throughout their pregnancy, many pregnant women experience back, shoulder, or neck pain. The pain is more severe later in pregnancy. Pregnancy Neck Pain: Common Causes

Every pregnancy is different, just like every person. Untreated ectopic pregnancies can quickly turn into life-threatening.

Preeclampsia can cause neck and shoulder pains during pregnancy. This serious condition can cause death for both mothers and unborn children. Preeclampsia complications and eclampsia are common in 25% of pregnancies. It can be extremely dangerous for both mother and baby and needs immediate medical attention.

Meningitis may also cause neck pain. This is an inflammatory disease that affects both the brain and the spinal cord. Meningitis is characterized by a headache, fever, stiffness, and swelling of the neck. A variety of infections can cause meningitis, including listeriosis. It can be deadly for both mother and baby.

Use a Neck and Back Support Pillow

It can be hard to get a good night’s sleep during pregnancy, especially if you are further along. You may feel more neck pain or back pain if you are unable to get comfortable. A maternity pillow can be a pillow of body size that supports a variety of areas, including your neck and back, belly, hips, and knees, as well as your head and neck.

Stretching can also help relax your body, reduce stress, and lengthen your muscles. Ask your chiropractor for safe, effective stretches and yoga positions that are pregnancy-safe.
  5. Hydrotherapy – Next time you are in the shower adjust your showerhead so that your neck is massaged for a few seconds with hot water and then for one minute with cold water. You will feel the pain diminish after repeating this several times. The hot water stimulates blood circulation and relieves sore muscles. Cold water reduces inflammation.

  7. Get a Neck Massage – Professional neck massages from a physical therapist or another trained professional are a great way of reducing or eliminating neck and back pain. For the best results, ask your spouse or a member of your family to rub your neck and back after a warm bath. You can also use a tennis ball against any flat surface or wall. You can place the ball between your back, and against the wall. Then, gently lean in towards the ball until you feel the right amount of pressure. Massage the area by rolling the ball against the wall using your back.
